In the field of semiconductor devices, field effect transistors (FETs) play an indispensable role in circuits with their unique conductive properties. The core of FETs is to use voltage to precisely control the flow of current, including the gate, source, and drain. It controls the charge density by changing the gate voltage field, and then adjusts the resistance to achieve precise control of the current.

Among them, threshold voltage and transconductance curve are two key parameters for evaluating the performance of field effect transistors.

Key points: The threshold voltage determines the voltage threshold at which the field effect transistor begins to conduct electricity, while the transconductance curve reflects the conductivity of the field effect transistor at different voltages, which is crucial to the stability and efficiency of the circuit.

 

Customer situation

A manufacturer specializing in the R&D and production of high-frequency switching power supplies, mainly DC-DC, AC-DC modular power supplies, various customized power supplies, etc. Since MOS tubes are usually used in pairs in the circuit, they require the same threshold voltage and transconductance, so the MOS tubes need to be tested in pairs.

 

Test requirements

Now, they face a technical challenge: the need to accurately test the threshold voltage and transconductance curve of the power MOS tube.

In the development of high-frequency switching power supplies, if the parameters of two MOS tubes are greatly different when paired, it may cause problems such as inconsistent switching performance, uneven current distribution, reduced efficiency, and increased electromagnetic interference, which in turn affects the stability and reliability of the power module.

Therefore, the MOS tube pairing accuracy should be strictly controlled to solve the power failure problem caused by inconsistent power tube parameters and ensure the stability and reliability of the power module.

 

Solution

Based on the above requirements, Tonghui Electronics provided a solution: STA9992 series high-precision source meter + SBF0087B + SBF0087E + SBF0087G for testing.

 

Test process

First, insert the SBF0087B conversion box into CH1 (front panel) and CH2 (rear panel) of STA9992, then connect the SBF0087E shielded test box through the SBF0087G triaxial cable, insert the MOS tube into the SBF0087E test box, set the test parameters, and use the internal expert mode for testing.

The STA999X series high-precision source meter has excellent test performance. It can accurately measure the threshold voltage and transconductance curve of the field effect tube by entering the expert mode without the need for host computer software, providing reliable data support for MOS tube pairing.
